THE COLOR WORLDS
The color worlds of the Linha collection are incarnations of places around the world that I have traveled to and that have inspired me in a special way. Each color world captures a unique color palette inherent to that place and conveys its essence through the paint on the ceramic tiles.
ALGAIARENS
The bay of Algaiarens is located in the green valley of La Vall, a region in the north of the island of Menorca. The landscape is defined by dense pine forests, scrubs, dune systems, reddish rocks, and secluded beaches. The evergreen pine trees radiate a rich dark green color that contrasts with the fresh, lighter green tones of the surrounding wild olive trees and scrubs, nestled in the bright light gray sand. As an ensemble, the flora of La Vall creates the vibrant Algaiarens color palette.

GION
This color world is inspired by the „Hanamachi“ district of „Gion“ in the city of Kyoto, Japan. The streets are lined with traditional wooden townhouses called „machiya.“ Brown and beige tones define the atmosphere of the wooden architecture. The soft beige color of the „sudare,“ the traditional Japanese blinds, and the bright off-white of the shoji paper contrast with the dark timber structures. Kyoto is surrounded by subtropical forests and mossy grounds, which complement the Gion color palette.

LA MOLA
El Pilar de la Mola is a small village on the Balearic island of Formentera, located on the limestone plateau „La Mola,“ which forms a peninsula in the eastern part of the island. The crystal-clear turquoise water found on the pristine beaches of Formentera contrasts with the vibrant marine blue of the deep Balearic Sea. These two blue tones are complemented by the fresh green of the Posidonia oceanica. This seagrass, which is endemic to the Mediterranean, surrounds the island of Formentera and protects its coastlines and underwater wildlife, preserving the natural beauty of Formentera.

GIORGIOS
Agios Georgios is the name of a sheltered, small beach with a beautiful view of the uninhabited island of Despotiko. Beige sand with white marble pebbles line the beach and meet the calm and clear light blue water. Next to the beach is a chapel with a pale blue dome. Behind it, the glittering Aegean sea extends beyond the horizon. This secluded beach serves as the inspiration of the Giorgios color palette, which is composed of the clear whitewash of the marble, the pale light blue of the chapel’s roof and the deep, serene blue of the Aegean sea.

THE STORY
MADE IN SINTRA
The Linha collection is a collaboration between Friends of Paula and the historic factory Viúva Lamego, founded in 1849 and located in Sintra, Portugal. With over 175 years of expertise in ceramics, particularly tile making, Viúva Lamego carries on the legacy of Portuguese tile craftsmanship.
All tiles are hand- painted by the talented artisans at Viúva Lamego, just as they have been throughout the factory‘s long history.
FROM IDEA TO PRODUCT
When I first came into contact with Viúva Lamego for an interior project, I didn’t realize that this was the beginning of turning the Linha tiles—an initially theoretical project—into a physical product. After spending several days in the factory in Sintra, getting to know the process and the people behind it, painting tiles, and experimenting with colors, a tile collection was eventually born.
Creation often starts with a single line on a piece of paper. The line both separates and connects, defining boundaries while also enabling connection. „Linha,“ the Portuguese word for „line,“ was born from the idea that one line connects all tiles and brings them together in a coherent pattern. Each of the three tile designs features a line that connects the midpoint of the sides of two tiles. This enables various arrangements of the tiles and the possibility to create infinite panels, allowing for great personal creativity.

THE MATERIAL
The ceramic tiles are made from locally sourced clay from Viúva Lamego’s own clay quarry, which is situated near the factory.
Clay is a purely natural product that is created through decomposition of silicate-bearing rocks. Clay consists primarily of clay minerals, is generally plastically deformable given sufficient water content, and becomes solid when dried or fired.
The tiles are fired at 960 degree Celsius and become extremely resistant through this process, withstanding heat, precipitation and uv-radiation while keeping their vibrant shine.
